Introduction. Crises and threats associated with globalization and, as a result, the emergence of new military and political conflicts on the world stage have led to the need to rethink the construct of national identity. The article examines the structure of the national identity of Russians, problems of identification in changing geopolitical and macropolitical conditions. In the course of the study conducted by the authors of the article, it was established that the main elements of national identity are legal identity and political identity, which can be combined into a macrocategory - political and legal identity. Methods. The study of the features of national identity in the political and legal aspect required the use of an integrated approach that combines both general scientific methods and the methodology used in political science and jurisprudence (structural functionalism, institutionalism, political and legal analysis, etc.). Results. The emergence of new formats of political and legal identity indicates the need to reorient state systems to new contours of interaction and mutual influence in the context of international relations. Political identity is undergoing modernization in different segments: a supranational/civilizational identity is emerging, traditional political values are being replaced by hybrid ones, etc. The formation of the modern national identity of Russian citizens is influenced by complex transformation processes (political, legal, socio-economic, cultural) that began in Russian society after the collapse of the Soviet Union. In the post-Soviet period, the Soviet identity that had been forming for decades was eliminated, which led to serious negative consequences: legal nihilism, atomization of society, lack of patriotic value orientations, etc. A number of dominant factors influence the formation of the new national identity of Russian citizens: political and legal cultures, education and upbringing system, transformation of political and legal systems, economic well-being, and a number of others
