The article deals with the need to use both public and covert forces, means and methods of operational-search activities in order to identify, disclose and investigate pickpocketing. The methods of countering thefts committed from clothes, bags or other hand luggage, which are with the victim, are presented. The most significant elements of the operational-investigative characteristics of such crimes, including the subject, place and method of their commission, are considered. Depending on the method of committing pickpocketing, the main «professional» groups of pickpockets were identified. Measures implemented by criminals to counteract employees of operational units of law enforcement agencies are considered. Attention is focused on the prevention of pickpocketing in the activities of internal affairs bodies.
