The relationship between motivational readiness to serve and the beliefs, perceptions and values of law enforcement officers
Abstract and keywords
Abstract:
Introduction. The significance of this study is derived from the challenge of sustaining motivation to maintain police service. The practical significance of the study lies in its ability to identify and prevent negative personal factors that demotivate law enforcement officers. The objective of the study is to examine the relationship between motivational readiness for serving and the individual psychological characteristics of staff within the territorial units of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia. Methods of the study are psychodiagnostic methods, aiming for assessment of the motivational aspects of the individual and the author’s questionnaire for evaluating the working conditions of law enforcement officers. Descriptive statistics, the Shapiro-Wilk statistical test, Levene’s test, Spearman’s correlation coefficient, the Mann-Whitney non-parametric test, and the Kruskal-Wallis non-parametric H test were employed. Results. The present study examined the applicability of the theoretical model of three motivations (“service”, “legality”, “fulfilment”) and its role in assessing the subjective attitudes of law enforcement officers towards continuing their service. A significant statistical discrepancy has been emerged between the motivations of officers wishing to remain in service and those who are ready to resign. This research explores the relationship between the motivations of “service”, “legality” and “fulfilment” and individual values, basic beliefs, professional self-definition and sense of justice. It is concluded that the approach delineated in the study may be applicable in enhancing the efficacy of work undertaken by personnel of internal affairs bodies.
